AZIZA SHAD, MD

Dr. Shad’s world-renowned work in pediatric cancer research and clinical treatment has spanned more than 25 years and several continents.  She is the Chair, Herman & Walter Samuelson Children's Hospital & Director, Division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore.  She is formerly the director of Georgetown University Hospital’s Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Blood and Marrow Transplantation at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. 

 

In 2003, Dr. Shad founded the Pediatric Cancer Survivorship Clinic at Georgetown University Hospital to provide ongoing care for her patients. This clinic has been at the forefront of understanding the late effects, or long-term side effects of cancer treatments. In April 2008, Dr. Shad published a guide for pediatric cancer survivors and their families titled, "The Next Step: Crossing the Bridge to Survivorship." 

 

In 2006, Dr. Shad was named the first Amey Distinguished Professor. The Amey family, grateful for the care Dr. Shad gave their daughter, established The Amey Distinguished Professorship in Neuro-Oncology and Childhood Cancer at Georgetown. 

 

In addition to her work at Georgetown, Dr. Shad dedicates significant time to improving the survival rates in children with cancer in developing countries. As the Director of International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research USA, she works with physicians from Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America. She travels to oncology centers in developing countries to educate oncologists and nurses, guide patient treatments, organize workshops, and teach palliative care. Dr. Shad has been instrumental in establishing palliative care and pediatric cancer programs in several Middle Eastern and Asian countries. 

 

Dr. Shad has been consistently listed in the Washingtonian Magazine 'Top Docs' issue, and received a number of awards including, most recently, the 2007 GRAVITAS Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Work from GRAVITAS International, and the 2007 Alumni Fellow Award from the Pennsylvania State Alumni Association.
